CHARLESTON — Former State Tourism Commissioner Amy Shuler Goodwin will meet with friends and supporters tomorrow (Thursday, February 24) in Charleston’s East End.
Speculation has been strong that Goodwin, also a former gubernatorial and mayoral spokesperson, will announce her candidacy for Mayor of Charleston. Current Independent Mayor Danny Jones has said he will not run again in 2018. Jones, a former Republican, has endorsed J.B.Akers, a Republican, to replace him.
Goodwin, a Democrat, is the wife of former Southern District US Attorney Booth Goodwin. As such, she is a member of the politically prominent Goodwin family.
Other Democrats have expressed an interest in running for Mayor, setting up the likelihood of a contested primary.
Amy Goodwin will greet supporters at 4:20 pm tomorrow at East End Community Park on Dixie Street. From the Capitol, drivers are told to turn right on Elizabeth Street, make a left on Jackson Street, a right on Nancy Street, and a left on Dixie. The park is on the right.
Goodwin was spokesperson for former Governor Bob Wise as well as ex-Governor Earl Ray Tomblin. She was also the Director of Communications for the late Charleston Mayor G. Kemp Melton.
