Gregory’s Web brief
by Ron Gregory
The Marshall University Board of Governors has agreed to remove the name “Jenkins Hall” from the campus building named in honor of Confederate General Albert Gallatin Jenkins.
It’s all a part of the nationwide effort to remove names of those who offend segments of the population because of their life histories.
Petitioners had gathered hundreds of signatures demanding the change at Jenkins Hall. Another petition asked that references to the late Ku Klux Klan Grand Kleagal Robert C. Byrd likewise be removed from campus facilities. The board took no action on that request.
For now, officials said the Jenkins building will simply be known as the “Education Building.”
An alternate name being suggested is “Woody Williams Hall” in honor of the famed military hero.
It seems to me that would be a fitting name to honor the iconic veteran.
Let’s urge the board to name it “Williams Hall.”
In the meantime, Byrd’s name also needs to go.
